Purpose
Photovoltaic's (PV) is finally gaining solid ground in the Arab Countries, in view of the abundant solar radiation on this region. However, no national strategy yet exists in any of the Arab Countries for R & D, Manufacturing and Application or for the Promotion of the Use of PV. Egypt-Japan University for Science & Technology (E-JUST) has arranged a Workshop for addressing these topics. Top scientists in the field of PV were invited from Egypt, Europe, Japan and US to the WS to deliver presentations and take part in the formation of the three-pronged National Strategy of the Arab Countries. The Strategy could then be adapted by each country according to its circumstances, and recommended for adoption. The conference programe included sessions on
 Current R & D on PV in the Arab countries, Europe, Japan and USA
 The Technology of Manufacturing of PV in the Arab countries, Europe, Japan and USA in the Arab countries, Europe, Japan and USA
 Promotion Plans of and Activities for the Use PV in Egypt, Europe, Japan & USA.
 In the final Session an outline of a Comprehensive Strategy for R & D, Manufacturing and Promotion of PV was discussed and agreed upon.

The Agenda of the Workshop (WS) is included in Annex 1, whereas a short report of the WS is given below.

E-JUST and IBM Celebration of Smart City Initiative on December 21

IBM has held a special event to celebrate the Smart City Initiative with E-JUST. The event was hosted on Wednesday, 21st of December, in Helnan Palestine Hotel, Alexandria.
HE Prof. Osama El-Fouly, Governor of Alexandria, Eng. Amr Taleb, General Manager of IBM Egypt, Prof. Yousry El-Gamal, Chairman of the Board-of-Trustees of E-JUST, Prof. Ahmed Khairy, President of E-JUST, Prof. Mohamed El-Sharkawy, Vice President for Research and Dean Mohamed Ragab have attended the Event. Among the attendees were EJUST CSE staff, students, and reporters from various newspapers and magazines.

Dr Ahmed El-Mahdy, the director of E-JUST Smart City research Facility, has presented a general overview of the research objective of the facility.
He mentioned that it is expected that within 40 years, 70% of the world population would be living in cities; however, recent research has shown significant stress levels for city living. He then mentioned that computing technology can be developed to apply to help improve quality of life of city dwellers by exploiting a novel holistic modeling approach, and leveraging cloud computing and parallel processing.

Dr El-Mahdy introduced two PhD students (also holders of the prestigious IBM PhD Fellowships), Eng. Mohamed Abdel Aziz and Eng. Sameh AboSamra who are working on two important objectives. Eng. Abdel Aziz presented his research work, under the supervision of Dr Walid Gomaa, in utilizing 'multi-agents' in controlling complex scenarios of a multi-intersection traffic zones.
The work targets a real-zone in Alexandria. Eng. Sameh, presented is research (under the supervision of Dr. El-Mahdy), in developing a parallel computation platform on the cloud for efficiently executing smart application.
Initial results achieved more than 70 times speedup than typical for controlling a single intersection. The work is published in Springer Lectures Notes in Computer Science.

It was mentioned that research progress is a result of the close interactions with Dr. Hisham El-Shishiny, World-Wide Leader of IBM Centre of Advanced Studies. Dr El-Shishiny is actively supporting the initiative, and providing access to IBM BlueGene supercomputer to E-JUST. Also the research is due to many fruitful discussions with Prof. Amin Shoukry, chairman of CSE department, Egyptian and Japanese professors.

IBM has announced the renewal of the IBM PhD Fellowships for the two students; that followed by press conference, where reporters had various interesting questions about the applicability problems of such research in Egypt, and a spirit of joint collaboration between the government of Alexandria, E-JUST, and IBM was emphasized.

Following the Japanese best educational practices, the Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering Program at E-JUST started an initiation that follows a tradition in the Japanese schools where each department head/professor holds a research seminar on a monthly basis and students get to compete over presenting and illustrating their research activities and proposals in front of their class mates and professors in addition to studying and presenting other research papers from external reputable journals. The professors and program heads then hold a monthly party celebrating the winning students with their colleagues and young staff members with the purpose of strengthening the professors-students relationship as well as relieving the work stress.

The MTR program at E-JUST started this initiation with two main activities; research seminar and paper seminar. In a research seminar; the student gets to present his research proposal and share his progress and current status with his colleagues and professors while in a paper seminar; the student selects, study’s and presents a published paper in one of the reputable scientific journal that is related to his research work. With this activity, students will become more familiar with other teams working in their field, understand deeply and get acquainted with the state-of-the-art technologies and findings in this field and may get used of the published data in his paper. Paper seminars are considered a very good opportunity to students in widening their scientific scope and perspective by getting many ideas from different research areas. In both paper and research seminars each student is allowed to give 20 minutes talk + 10 minutes for faculty members and students questions.

The Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering graduate program is one of the active programs at

The Chemicals and Petrochemicals Engineering Program of Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) received the distinguished Egyptian scholar Professor Mostafa El-Sayed, Professor at the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, where he gave a Lecture entitled: “Confinement Effects on the Nanoscale and some of their Applications” on December 28, 2010 within the premises of E-JUST temporary location at Mubarak City for Scientific Research and Technology Applications (MuCSAT). The lecture was attended by all E-JUST students, academic and administrative staff headed by Professor Ahmed Khairy, E-JUST President.

Professor El-Sayed shed light on the Nanoscience and the property changes of material on the nanoscale and its confinement effects, where he mentioned the idea of changing the size of a material which changes its properties and thus helps in discovering new materials. Professor El-Sayed highlighted the effects of confining reactions to nano-particles cavities (nanoreactors) which enhance their rates and applications to environmental problems, while confining photons to the size of gold nano-particles, enhance their light scattering properties and absorption rates.

Professor El-Sayed also illustrated his newest findings and techniques in using gold-nanoparticles in cancer treatment. They can scatter light very strongly and, if bound to cancer cells, they enable us to detect cancer. Depending on their size and shape, they can also absorb light very strongly and convert it into localized photo thermal heat that can melt attached cancer cells. Gold nanoparticles can act as drugs as well.

He also mentioned that metallic gold is more precious on the nanoscale as it reacts and catalyzes different reactions with different shapes, confines reactants to its nanoscale and enhances its catalytic properties, captures resonant photons, strongly absorbed light is converted to heat and heat could be used to destroy unwanted cells. The lecture was concluded with Professor Khairy presenting E-JUST token as a gesture for this memorial event.

“We are all honored to have such an eminent and distinguished scholar among our new born University, wishing this could be the beginning of fruitful cooperation”… Professor Khairy stated.

With the attendance of Professor Youssry El-Gamal, E-JUST Board of Trustees Chairperson and Professor Ahmed B. Khairy, E-JUST President, Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) received Professor Aya Maher, Professor of Human Resources Management at the American University in Cairo (AUC) & Member of the Educational Committee, Policy Making Secretariat of Egypt, National Democratic Party (NDP) at its 25th weekly seminar on Tuesday, December 28, 2010.

Professor Aya shared with E-JUST students and staff her experience during her participation at the “World Youth in Japan” program; an initiation that was made by the government of Japan, where more than 700 youth from all over the world were selected to spend 2 and ½ months in Japan. This initiation was made with the objective of culture exchange and exploring the youth minds in many nationalities and their perspective towards Japanese people and culture. During the trip to Japan, each country had to show their program and exchange their culture “On Ship” in addition to staying with a Japanese family, visiting schools and educational institutions, governmental organizations and industrial enterprises.

“During my stay onboard the ship and in Japan, I have learnt a number of lessons which helped in re-shaping my personal and career life ever since” … Professor Aya stated. I learnt to plan ahead and organize every minor detail; 1 hour of planning saves 3 hours of implementation, a big part of the Japanese success is due to their high organizational skills. I learnt to be self-motivated and have a positive thinking; Japanese people could really convert any failure to a trial experience that will lead to success. I learnt how to manage crises effectively; that was during our stay on the ship, where the program heads rang a fake emergency alarm as an alert that the ship was sinking to test the reactions of all cultures in dealing with such a crises; a real reflection and life experience for all your crises management.

“Our strength lies in taking care of our family members and loving each other”… Professor Aya stated. In spite of the Japanese fast pace environment, they still preserve the warm and close family relationships; Japanese families are used to gather at tea ceremonies, lunch and dinner gatherings with neighbors on a daily basis where they mingle and share a lot of talks.

“There is never something called ‘last opportunity’ or ‘last chance’ as life is full of them” … Professor Aya said. I learnt to have more than one solution and options in various aspects of life; you should always have “Plan B”.

As a summary, I learnt a lot from this experience; effective decision making was one of the major inputs, time and crises management, early planning, self motivation and positive thinking, organization, attention to details and effective communication, group and teamwork.

“Be a balanced person to live happily and successfully” … Professor Aya stated.

Within the context of the mutual cooperation between Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) and the consortium of 12 top ranked universities and institutions in Japan, the Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering Department at E-JUST received Dr. Salvatore Sessa – Assistant Professor at Waseda University in Japan, Department of Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering for a 2 months PBL (Project Based Learning) course. This visit is a continuation for the intensive lectures held by Dr. Sessa on micro-controllers during his first visit to the premises E-JUST in October 2010.

As described by Dr. Sessa, a micro-controller is a small computer on a single integrated circuit containing a processor core, memory, and programmable input/output peripherals.

Micro-controllers are used in automatically controlled products and devices, such as automobile engine control systems, implantable medical devices, remote controls, office machines, appliances, power tools, and toys.

By reducing the size and cost compared to a design that uses a separate microprocessor, memory, and input/output devices, microcontrollers make it economical to digitally control even more devices and processes.. In other words, “Micro-controllers are the intelligent connections between the sensors and actuators” … Dr. Sessa stated.

Speaking about E-JUST students, Dr. Sessa commended on their high level performance, retention and curiosity in absorbing the material studied, where brainstorming sessions and discussions are conducted frequently and each student is required to study an international journal or conference to get more ideas to be used in their research proposals.

“The retention of E-JUST students is really impressive, I believe they really have very high potentials” … Dr. Sessa stated.

As one of the course objectives, students are currently working on a project on the electromyography EMG); a technique for evaluating and recording the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles., The students are expected, by the end of this course, to learn how to use the microcontroller and the EMG technique in designing an “Artificial Hand” for people with physical disability.

Speaking about the establishment of the first University holding Japan's name in Egypt, Dr. Sessa described E-JUST as a promising project by saying “E-JUST is a symbol of strong collaboration between Egypt and Japan, I believe opening a Japanese University in Egypt is a golden opportunity for new intellectuals to help nourish both economies” … said Dr. Sessa.

The Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering Graduate Program is one of the active programs at
E-JUST, with a total of 12 MSc and PhD students enrolled.

The Department has recently conducted the “Mechatronics Simulation Day” which was done in collaboration with Mubarak City for Scientific Research and Technology Applications (MuCSAT) and in partnership with Promech and MSC Software and is currently in the process of preparing for the “Bio-robotics Workshop” planned to be held in December 2010 in partnership with Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS).

With the participation of eminent speakers in the field of mechatronics and robotics engineering from Egypt and Japan and a number of elite students and professors from eminent Egyptian universities; Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) in collaboration with the Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Academy of Sciences for Developing World (TWAS) held the Biorobotics Workshop from December 13 – 15, 2010. The first 2 days were held within the premises of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, while the 3rd day was hosted at E-JUST temporary location of Mubarak City for Scientific Research and Technology Applications (MuCSAT) in New Borg El-Arab City.

Day 1 was commenced with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina’s 5th anniversary video followed by welcome remarks by Dr. Mohamed El-Faham, CSSP Director highlighting the importance of the field of biorobotics as a new emerging and deeply interdisciplinary field that could be used for various scientific tools and applications.

The first session was conducted by Professor Minoru Asada, Professor of Mechanical Engineering for Computer-Controlled Machinery at Osaka University where he presented an illustration about the various “Real Robot Leagues” focusing on the “RoboCup ”. As described by Professor Asada; the “RoboCup”is an international research and education initiative.
It is an attempt to foster intelligent robotics research by providing a standard problem where wide range of technologies can be integrated and examined, as well as being used for integrated project-oriented education. “RoboCup is a landmark project to set a goal high enough so that a series of technical breakthroughs is necessary to accomplish the task, this set of technologies should form the foundation of the next generation of industries”… Professor Asada stated.

For this purpose, RoboCup chose to use “Soccer Game” as a primary domain, and organizes RoboCup (originally called “The Robot World Cup Soccer Games and Conferences”, now called “RoboCup World Championship and Conference”). In order for a robot team to actually perform a soccer game, various technologies must be incorporated including: design principles of autonomous agents, multi-agent collaboration, strategy acquisition, real-time reasoning, robotics and sensor-fusion. RoboCup is a task for a team of multiple fast-moving robots under a dynamic environment. Professor Asada also shed a light on the RoboCup Junior Leagues; a project-based educational robotics activity for students up to age 19 which are competitions designed to reach creative young minds with a range of interests and skills emphasizing cooperative problem solving. The RoboCup Junior has 3 leagues; the Rescue, Soccer and Dance league.

The second session titled “Future Robotics” by Professor Asada, discussed the next generation robot industry in Japan in general and in Osaka specifically. Faced with the major challenges of the aging of society, the falling of the birth rate and the declining population, Professor Asada mentioned Japan’s increasing need to utilize robots in fields such as nursing care and welfare; where under such circumstances, government councils such as the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy and the Council for Science and Technology Policy are focusing on robots as priority issue. With such political significance of robots, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is advancing technological development and improvement of the robot market environment, which are slated as two pillars of its robot industry.

Day 2 was also commenced by Professor Asada where he discussed the “Cognitive Development Robotics (CDR)” and its core idea. The CDR as explained by Professor Asada aims at understanding human cognitive developmental process by synthetic or constructive approaches, where its core idea is “Physical Embodiment” that enables information structuring through interactions with the environment including other agents. Several CDR design issues were presented; as the kinds of capabilities or structures that should be embedded, how to set up the environment so that robots embedded therein can gradually adapt themselves to more complex tasks in more dynamic situations and the temporal development structure. Several videos and simulations were displayed illustrating the Visuo-Tactile Face Representation through Self-induced motor and Vowel Acquisition by Maternal Imitation.

Last day sessions were conducted by Professor Hiroshi Yamakawa, Professor at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University and Dr. Sessa Selvatore, Adjunct Professor at the Program of Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering at E-JUST. The day began with welcome remarks by Professor Ahmed B.
E-JUST held its 24th Weekly Seminar titled “The World Energy Situation and the Role of Renewable Energy Sources and Advanced Nuclear Technologies in Solving the Energy and Environmental Problems”.

This Seminar comes within the frame of E-JUST concern with the energy status and problems all over the globe and especially in Egypt, Africa and the Arab region.on December 19, 2010.

The Seminar was conducted by Professor Mohamed Abdou- Distinguished Professor and Director of the Center for Energy Science and Technology (CESTAR), University of California - Los Angeles, CA, USA. The Seminar took place within the premises of E-JUST temporary location at Mubarak City for Scientific Research and Technology Applications (MuCSAT).

Prior to the Seminar, Professor Mohamed Abdou discussed with Professor Youssry El-Gamal, E-JUST BoT Chairperson, Professor Ahmed B.Khairy E-JUST President and E-JUST academics, the different research projects that could be conducted through E-JUST which could help in increasing E-JUST’s contribution to the understanding of energy matters.

Professor Abdou provided a comprehensive illustration about the world’s energy situation and how renewable energy as solar energy, wind energy and more specifically nuclear energy could help in finding solutions to the major environmental and energy problems. He explained that the energy problem is global and that is due to the increase in the world’s population, hence, higher energy consumption.

Professor Abdou mentioned that the real problem is the economic, environmental, security risks of fossil fuel dependence. “80% of energy is generated by burning fossil fuels causing the climate change and debilitating pollution...Carbon dioxide levels have been rising over the past the decades..We are provoking the atmosphere!!” said Professor Abdou. Meeting the energy challenge and reducing the Green House gas emission requires pursuing a diversified portfolio approach:

• Improve energy efficiency

• Expand use of existing “clean” energy sources (e.g. nuclear and renewable sources – solar, wind, etc.)

• Develop technologies to reduce impact of fossil fuels use (e.g. carbon capture and sequestration)

• Develop major new (clean) energy sources (e.g. fusion)

• Develop alternate (synthetic) fuels and electrical energy storage for transportation

He reviewed the evolution of nuclear power and the current nuclear energy research objectives that mainly tackle the means of extending the life of currently operating plants from 40 years to beyond 60 years. He also highlighted the importance of the advanced nuclear technologies and that the nuclear power must remain a key part of our energy portfolio.” The United States of America currently has 104 nuclear power plants, 1 more under construction and 9 additional are planned” added Professor Abdou.

In conclusion, the Seminar addressed how energy plays a critical role in economic prosperity, national security and environmental quality.

Professor Mohamed Abdou was a graduate of the 1st batch of Nuclear Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University, Egypt. He received his PhD in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin and worked as Department Head at Argonne National Laboratory and Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology prior to joining UCLA.

Understanding the fact that change is the only constant and how the entire world is encountering changes in all aspects, E-JUST held its 23rd Weekly Seminar entitled “Leading Change and Communication 2.0 Bye Bye Complexity..Hello Simplicity” on Tuesday, December 14, 2010. The seminar took place within the premises of E-JUST Educational Building at its Housing Complex.

The seminar was conducted by Mr. Donath Markus - Senior Expert Capacity and Organizational Development, Program of the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) in Egypt.

Since 1956, GTZ has been implementing many different projects in all parts of the country on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). GTZ also works on behalf of other German public-sector clients and international organizations.

The seminar focused on the changes which the markets are undertaking as globalization and digitalization and the correct and innovative management methodologies and proper communication techniques that help in following the path of change. Mr. Donath highlighted the importance of academia-industry cooperation in tackling market challenges and evaluating different strategic scenarios.
Moreover, Mr. Donath presented the 8 steps required for leading change as follows;

• Create sense of urgency: which means promoting for the idea of change and convincing everyone with the need of major improvements and to look forward for something new, different and better.

• Pull together the guiding team: meaning that inspiring people to change needs leaders with a combination of management and leadership skills.

• Create a change vision and strategy: A specific and well-written vision will help the industrial organization to consolidate and know where it’s heading and what to focus on.

• Communicate for buy in: Many change attempts fail due to the lack of proper communication techniques, therefore, communication needs to be simple, actionable and reach far enough into the organization.

• Empower others to realize the change vision: It’s important to empower employees and make them feel they can influence the vision and get them attached to the critical issues otherwise they would feel ineffective and powerless.

• Produce short term wins: Change takes a long time so it’s better to produce short term wins as recognition makes employees focus on the vision.

• Don’t let up- consolidate your success: Consolidating gains is important. With highlighting wins and them up together to a greater one, employees with feel the change within the organization.

• Anchor change in culture: The organization’s culture must reflect the new change; otherwise employees might suggest going back to the “old way”.

The seminar was concluded by explaining the different challenges that could face the organization that is seeking change and how commitment is the basic ingredient in the recipe of success.

The paper was submitted by Eng. Adel Barakat – MSc student at Electronics and Communications Engineering Program and co-authored by Dr. Mostafa El-Khamy – Assistant Professor of Electronics and Communications Engineering at E-JUST, titled "Bandwidth extension of UWB planar antenna with band-notched characteristics”.

Being the first paper accepted for publication by an E-JUST student, Eng. Adel has been awarded a certificate of appreciation by Professor Ahmed Khairy – E-JUST Acting President, for his sincere efforts and dedication on his research work.

“I would like to seize this opportunity to thank Eng. Adel for his outstanding efforts and I consider this the first step towards achieving E-JUST objective in playing a leading role in the reformation of research in Egypt” … Professor Khairy stated.

In his paper, Eng. Adel proposed an ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with a band notched filter. As well known, the transmission range of this antenna covers the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) unlicensed band from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz with a notch filter from 4.9 to 6.3 GHz to avoid interference with IEEE802.11a system.

The notch filter is implemented using a U-shaped slot. To extend the impedance bandwidth of the antenna, an electro band-gap (EBG) structure is used. EBG lattice holes surrounding the radiating patch enhances the impedance bandwidth to be from 3 GHz to 12 GHz with a return loss (S11 < -10 dB). The return loss (S11) for the designed antenna is simulated using HFSS® software package. The antenna design is also fabricated on Rogers RO3006 substrate and measured using Vector Network Analyzer (HP8719ES). The measurement results also confirm that the proposed technique is effective in extending the impedance bandwidth to 12 GHz.

“Extending the bandwidth by 2 GHz will help in increasing data rates especially for applications that require high bandwidth, I hope my research work would be of benefit to all users” …. Eng. Adel stated.

The Middle East Conference on Antennas and Propagation (MECAP) is an IEEE international conference supported by the top level associations in Antennas & Propagation (IEEE APS, IEEE MTTS). It provides through its presentations and exhibition, the ideal place for the exchange of scientific and technical information, both at academic and industrial levels, and fosters collaboration and cooperation in the Antenna and Propagation domain both at the Middle East and global levels.

Cairo, Egypt was chosen this year to endorse the conference for the first time in the Middle East from 20 to 22 October 2010 after the remarkable success of the European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EUCAP) 2009 held in Berlin, Germany. This year’s conference is
sponsored by a number of reputable institutions in Egypt and worldwide as the IEEE, American University in Cairo (AUC), Smart Com Incorporation and many others.

All members of E-JUST community extend their sincere wishes to Eng. Adel for this remarkable achievement.

Congratulations Eng. Adel!
